|

I have long wondered why Pontiac seemed to have purged its model break out information prior to 1955. Hard for me to imagine a car company wouldn't keep some sort of records of what it sold the prior year, etc--how could a company project it's next year expected demand? Stuff like lining up convertible/hardtop doors, convertible top assemblies, etc.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? I am the proud owner of a 1954 Star Chief Catalina hardtop and it certainly seems to be a rare car today. Would like to know if anyone has any ideas of its production totals, other than the 150,000 or so Star Chiefs built that model year.? thanks, Harland _________________ |

Have never found a reason why PMD never kept (or at least ever made public) their earlier production figures beyond huge totals. All the other GM divisions kept very detailed production break downs. It will probably always be a mystery. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

Alas, all that may have had knowledge of production break out are likely dead. Wonder why Pontiac started to keep records in 1955? Perhaps some hobbiests stepped in before records were purged--surely there had to be records, if only to help anticipate the following year's production and expected parts needs. Guess you can use Oldsmobile break out for some estimated breakout. Harland _________________ |

I agree, it seems impossible that any planning could be done without history numbers.
I have done just as you suggest and taken Oldsmobile numbers to guesstimate things like how many of a certain body style might have been made. They have to be close proportionally. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |
