The fact that your car runs fine and starts well during the day when you're using it off and on would indicate that the fuel is draining back from the carb while it is sitting for a longer period of time. I would doubt that the fuel pump is draining back to the tank, but would consider the carb bowl draining out. Probably into the engine, which isn't good as it will also leak past the rings and into the oil. But, it is such a small amount, and also subject to evaporation too.
Now, in a similar vein, but quite different, is the possibility of high heat build up that "boils" out the fuel from the bowl after shut down and a long enough period of time.
The first thing you need to do is to determine if in fact the fuel in not in the carb, therefore not going into the carb when you try to start. To do that, after it has set over night, remove the air cleaner and look down the carb throat while pulling back and forth on the carb linkage. You should see the accelerator pump shooting fuel into the throat.
Assuming the accelerator pump works, it would not pump gas if there was none in the bowl to pump. To know if the pump is working, pump the gas linkage when it is running and see if it shoots gas into the carb (be careful and don't get your face over the carb in case it might back fire-- good bye eyebrows!). A bad accelerator pump will also cause a "flat spot" (cough, gasp, balk, etc.) when you stomp down on the gas while moving). Check all this first and let us know what you find. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

Will do! Thanks. I rebuilt the single action fuel pump, but the kit I got for the carb was overwhelming! I pulled the carb off of the parts car and plan to get it rebuilt then I won't have to be without My baby for too long! Started working on vent windows fun pulling the clip that holds the handle on The part that holds the vent window came out easy after a little cleanup and some POR 15 I will put all new gaskets on then on to the pass. side! _________________ |

There is a simple plyers-like tool for removing those "C" clips. It slides right in behind the escutcheon, close it a bit and pull the clip off... then hunt all over the garage floor for where it sprung to! Actually just cup your hand over it as you pull it out.
I bet they sell this tool in auto parts stores. Worth checking, they are invaluable. Don't worry about the money spent, you will be needing it more that likely later too. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |
