Folks,
HOWDY ALL YA'LL, from San Antonio, TX.
(this is my first post & "all ya'll" is the usual TEXICAN inclusive plural for everybody within yelling distance.)
i've just bought my FIRST Pontiac, to restore/enjoy, with 140,000 original miles. it is essentially UNMODIFIED & it runs like a charm. - the above Sunbird Convertible GT, which is white in color, is (according to Edmonds.com) one of about 1300 built in 1988.
(the VIN: 1G2JU31K2J7547729)
i wonder how many of this model are still drivable, given 24 years of use???
(convertibles of of sorts tend to have a LOW survival rate, when compared to sedans/coupes.)
the ONLY missing item is the complete HOOD & the emblem off the nose. = While the hood was OFF it was RUN-OVER by a drunk-driver in a 4x4 pickup truck & RUINED, believe it or not.
(the hood was removed to have a small dent removed & be repainted at a body shop at the time!)
so, i'm looking for a hood. - if anyone has a hood, which is surplus to your needs, i would like to buy it.

HI again,
the good news i've found 3 hoods. the BAD news is that ALL of them are over 1000 miles away. - the closest in NE.
the motor freight will be MORE than the hood. = BOO HOO.

Shipping can be a bugaboo. Have you checked truck freight? Might have to make a trip to a terminal, but often worth the inconvenience.
Also be sure the shipper "packages" it well. I would suggest a wooden form to securely enclose the hood. Even to bolt it to. But most importantly to protect it from dents, etc.
I have seen and heard just about everything when it comes to shipping. A friend in Wisconsin once bought a NOS grilel for his '33 Pontiac (and paid a healthy price for it too). When it arrived, he wondered why the box looked so small. When he opened it, he found the fellow cut it in half to fit the only box he had laying around. At least he cut it vertically and not horizontally!
It took some special silver soldering to put it back whole again. Extra money and stress that was unneeded. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

Glad to see this topic - what are the odds - I joined today!
I have the GT Turbo model - I'm the ORIGINAL owner, too!
Love the car - but, alas, it's too old to get some replacement parts, and too "new" to be a classic and get the applicable replacement parts.
My pressing situation is that I need a compatible vapor cannister replacement. I replaced it with the "wrong" but similar part - it runs "great" but stinks like hell after a good run down the freeway here in Vegas. Still have the original cannister - was wondering if I can open it up and take it apart and "rebuild" the original cannister. It isn't "openable" - a sealed plastic cylinder.
VIN: 1G2JU31MXJ7571682
Original Part #: AC Delco 17087180KH Vapor Cannister
I've tried almost every "replacement parts" online supplier that I could find off and on for the last year - and always get the same answer: part is no longer available/made." I imagine this will be a familiar response as the years trickle by from now on.
The car is great - drives great, in great shape except for missing a few letters from the Pontiac logo - and I want to keep driving it - not just having a "trophy". Sorry guys - not interested in selling or selling off parts! (Sorry to hear about the damaged hood - ugh!). I replaced the original crappy radio with a new stereo - sorry - I like my tunes - now I want the damned thing to operate properly, dammit!
1) Does anybody know where I can get the part?
2) I don't see why I can't get an eq1valent part based on the engine type/size/function.
I'm not a mechanic - I can do basic oil/brakes/maintenence - I know enought to do moderate repairs - and I can take apart a house and rebuild it - but an auto is not exactly my strong point.
I eventually want to get the emblem & lettering, too, but first is to get it running properly.
Oh - bought mine in Honolulu, and it's got something like 80 thousand miles on it - not much room to "travel" on an island - eat your hearts out - ha ha!! Now that I'm in Vegas, and had the car shipped over, I still don't drive it much outside the valley - sort of like a "land locked" island... _________________ |

You might find the parts at Vintage Parts Inc.:
http://www.vpartsinc.com/
They buy the left over inventory from the automakers when they no longer want to carry them in their warehouses. I've bought items from them and have been very happy. |

I have a 1988 Sunbird GT Convertible with 28,000 miles. It is beautiful and everything is original. Just had the fuel pump replaced and it runs great. I am looking for a good home for it and this posting string looks promising. |
