I have a 68 GTO Conv. I think it is one owner, but want to find out more detail as to numbers produced, numbers still existing, and options that make the car more rare.
ie. my car is 4 speed with bench seats and am/fm radio.

Thanks.

Klownman

1968 GTO convertible production numbers were fairly low for manual transmission cars.

In your post, you did not give specifics on engine option your car has.

Anyway, here are the breakouts for the following manual transmission cars.

400 Ram Air with M/T - 92

400 H.O. with M/T - 766

400 Standard with M/T - 3116

My friend owns one of the rare 1968 Ram Air II GTO's. His is a 4-speed coupe. I believe they built a total of 199 of these cars. The 199 is a combination of coupes and convertibles.

The '68 GTO is a very stylish car.

What other options are on the car?

Thanks

According to Eric White's GTO Identification Guide, he shows 9,980 convertibles for '68.

By transmission breakdown, he shows 3,875 convertibles with manual transmission (I assume with the standard 400 and optional H.O. 400).

Then he shows 92 convertibles with manual transmission and the RA and RAII engines.

Those are the only numbers shown seperating hardtops from convertibles. I hope you have one of the Ram Air engines! A manual transmission RA engine would carry the engine code "XS" for the RA and "WY" for the RAII.

I'm pretty sure my car is the basic 400, with manual tranny, quad four carb. other options are clock, hood tach, fm radio, not really sure would have to check the destination papers. I met Jim Wanger 15 years ago at gateway GTO convention, and he told me that the bench seats, fm radio and four speed mt package made the car extremely rare.

Is there a location where I could just pay to have the car researched by it's Vin #

I would contact PHS Automotive Services Inc.

There telephone number is (586) 781-5164.

Address:

PHS Automotive Services Inc.
P.O. Box 183251
Shelby Twp, Michigan 48318

Hopefully they can give you a better breakdown of production numbers on your '68.
