Where can I find out the production numbers for 1990 Sunbirds? Mine is a convertible, turbo with a 5-speed. I bought it new and special ordered it. Was told many years ago Pontiac only made a few with this combination in 1990, but Pontiac couldn't me the exact number. Any help would be appreciated.

According to John Gunnell's "Standard Catalog of Pontiac" there were 143,932 Sunbirds built of all styles. I am amazed that the number isn't broken down more. Since John has fixed up a couple of Sunbirds for himself and twin granddaughters, perhaps he has some better idea now of numbers. I'll drop him a note and ask his toughts. There can't be many like yours, for sure. |

John responded back with a hint to check the back of his really great book "75 Years of Pontiac- The Official History". If you ever get a chance to pick this book up, do so. It is really interesting. He was contacted by PMD to write it for their 75th anniversary. From what I was told, they didn't give him much time to do it either.... good thing they went to the Pontiac history expert!
Anywho.... the nearest the Sunbird numbers are "publicly" broken down for 1990 are: Sunbird SE- 12,860 and Sunbird GT- 4,813. John suggests internet Columbo work to try to discover anyone with better breakdowns. |

I was told in a letter from Pontiac that less than 500 1990 Sunbirds were built will turbos but they could not tell me how many with a 5 speed. This website is called "PontiacRegistry.com." If I can't find the answer here, then where? Doesn't Pontiac have to have a database of cars in case of recalls? Won't they let anyone see it? Thanks. _________________ |

The factories do not keep records (at least official ones) of breakdowns like you want. That does not mean that some ambitious person working for PMD did not do research and develope a listing for himself. But, those type of finds are rare.
You can understand why the factories really don't need to worry about who buys what, because if you bought it, they will fix it. But that being said, of course you would think someone, somewhere would want to know what was working well and what wasn't- and in what numbers. I bet, though, that they know exactly how many turbo units procurement bought, or were built. That could help... but who do you ask?!
It can get silly too. I have had people comtact me wanting to know SPECIFICALLY how many of "my car" were made with red top, blue interior, AM-only radio, and blackwall tires.
The estimate of 500 or less turbos was probably based on some know-how.... I wonder what. Concerning with 5-speeds, it will taks some real detective work to try to find some roads into PMD's old records. These are never simple tasks, and I have seen people devote nearly every waking minute of their hobby life to researching things like this.
The best bet is to start compiling every book and number you can find and hope that with that, and hopefully some other insights, some figures will start to gell.
Let us know what you learn as you investigate. We would like to share any finding so others can benefit too. |

Larry:
Thanks for the info. I would think that Pontiac would have to keep track for recall reasons, thanks Ralph. It is kind of sad that in this day and age of computers and the internet, the car companies still want to hide this kind of information. A friend of mine has a, dare I say it, a Ford. He has found out that it was 3 different cars before Ford sold it and it is the only 1971 Boss 302 ever made. Ford owners can pay for a Marit Report. Not sure why the Big 3 need to hide the information after 18 years. But I am sure they know best.......
I may try to write to Pontiac again, last time was 10 years ago or so. May be now they can give me more.
I will let you know.
