Would like anyone’s input on adding power steering to a ‘55Star Chief. I’m aware of the column and how the whole is removed. I need to know procedure with starter , brackets etc. If anyone could assist and have done change would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks Tim _________________ |

Unfortunately, according to the Hollander Interchange Manual, 1955 is only interchangeable with '55. Not even '56, which is kind of surprising.
But let's look at it from the glass-half-full side. That means if you locate a '55 parts car, everything you need specific to your car will be there. We know they are out there. Check with French Lake, Windy Hill, and RPM Motorsports, all in Minnesota. They are very familiar with the old car hobby and would know how to remove and ship an entire system.
However, anything is possible with thought and ingenuity. After all, I put a power rack and pinion steering system from a '94 Cavilier in my 1940 Pontiac. And, actually, since your '55 basically has the same steering geometry as my '40, that might be a way to go. If you don't mind not being original. It takes some effort, but I would share all the "secrets" I learned along the way.
Good luck, and keep us posted. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |
