There's good-news/bad-news here.

First some of the good-news.. congratulations on having one of the most popular Pontiacs of the earlier years... and a coupe too! The bad-news is that 1938 was a very low production year, making parts hunting these many years later challenging at best.

But, back to some more good-news. A quick check of the Hollander Interchange will broaden your search a bit. The same size and shape deck lid will fit from both 6 and 8 cylinder 1937 and 1938 Pontiac coupes. As will 1937 and 1938 Oldsmobile 6 and 8 Business and Club coupes, as well as 1937 and 1938 Buick models 46, 46S, and 66S.

There is a note, however regarding these other model deck lids that "changes are necessary regarding support arms, locks, etc."

The actual sheet metal may be a difficult hunt, but hopefully this will help a bit. For items like hinges and lock handles, etc. we have a couple suppliers who give our members nice discounts and specialize in earlier Pontiacs. Check in "AFFILITES" then "Member Discounts" places like California Pontiac Restorations, Kurt Kelsey, Then and Now, etc.

The hinges and handles/locks were popular after market items, I believe by companies like "Regal" or something like that. That may be all you can find as NOS for those are going to be quite rare.

Please keep us posted on your huint.

There has been a 1938 Pontiac listed on craig's list several times over the past few months. It is just the frame and the sheetmetal. I will keep you posted if he lists it again.

You would be suprised at the number of old Pontiacs listed on craig's list in St. Louis.

Hope you find a decklid! Good luck!

Thank you both for the info - I thought that the other makes were close in design - it's great to know for sure.

Also, thanks for the Craigs List info. I'll check the St. Louis site myself as well, as around here there is NOTHING! They probably all rusted away long ago . . .

Any leads would surely be appreciated. And thanks again - this is why I love the Pontiac hooby!

Joe

There are two old Buicks on Craigs list in St. Louis. One is a 1938 2-dr 40 series model 48. Noticed it was not listed with Larry's interchanging reference.

What is the difference on this trunk?

That's the old "close but no cigar" situation. Unfortunately the model 48 is a 5-passenger 2-door touring, trunk back sedan. That would be a much shorter lid than the coupe has.

Just as a shot in the dark, try calling the people with the Buicks for sale. You never know, they may be "in them" and know where there are some more.

A gentlemen in Lawrenceville, GA has a couple of 1938 Pontiacs for sale. Maybe he has some extra parts for them or knows where some may be.

His telephone number is (770) 883-0136. His craig's list ad is as follows. He actually had two seperate ads with two different '38 Pontiacs.

There are actually three different 1938 Pontiacs listed in Alanta, GA on craig's list. Hopefully one of them may have additional parts.
