I just got a 63 catalina 4 door with the slim jim trans. It needs a front main seal and output shaft seal. But it doesnt shift correctly, ive learned so far the "tv" linkage is important. It isnt even hooked up on this car, someone installed an aftermarket carb and the linkage has nowhere to attach. I just dont want to waste alot of time pulling and installing seals reinstalling trans it there is a better option. Swap maybe? Any feedback would be great! Thanks _________________ |

Call our Automatic Transmission Tech Advisor. He is expert on all things related to Pontiac transmissions.

This isn't a major problem though in the normal operation of your car. Below is the info from the 1963 Shop Manual. As you see, the TV is more like a "boost" by being able to hold in a certain gear longer. Yes, it would be nice to find the original linkage and hook it up, but don't stop enjoying your car in the meantime.
Perhaps someone has the linkage laying around, but you can also check with Desert Valley Parts, Windy Hill, or French Lake. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

This may be a servo shifting issue if it's not downshifting. It sounds like it is perhaps staying in a higher gear, pushing you forward when you don't want to.
There is also an "overrun band servo" that actually creates a breaking action of sorts when coming to a stop. Certainly, if this isn't operating properly you will not get any transmission braking action.
Probably time for a professional to look at it. Or, as a last resort, have you poured a boatload of transmission cleaner into it to see if something is just gummed up and sticking? _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

It will downshift if i manualy use the selector. I have not tried any flush. I did notice it has ver clean fluid, likely changed recently. Ive found this trans requires type A fluid. It is likely that the previous owner used regular mercron. The front seal leaks pretty bad so im gonna pull it out , replace front and, output seals and drop pan take a lookie inside. Probably get type a _________________ |

If it works manually, it sounds like servos are sticking. If there is a vacuum line involved (I don't remember) check that it is in good condition and actually hooked up.
Don't forget to call Steve. He knows these things inside and out.
The fluid type isn't really critical. I've known GM guys who swore by Type F (Ford) fluid and used it in their Pontiacs. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |
