I guess the quick answer is anything will fit with a little "adapting."
A Google search turns up a lot of info on rearends, but it will take some digging to find perhaps find the definitive answer.
Recent experience with finding the correct newer axle assy. for my '40 Pontiac (turned out to be a '75 Nova 10-bolt, 8.5) opened my eyes about how many different versions of these things there are.
My first guess would be it would "fit." But try to find the width of both and the tread width (although that will vary due to wheel offset).
Measurement from backing plate-to-backing plate (non-disc) is the best comparison to make.
Then the spring perches and the type of springs need to be checked. In my case, I needed to know if I wanted single leaf or multi-leaf perches. (Multi-leaf perches worked out well with my stock '40 springs).
Anyone out there actually make that swap? I have a '75 T/A that I could measure the rearend if needed.... if I can get under the thing! _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

The 75 rear end uses a multi-leaf spring setup, while the 67 used a monoleaf (and had torque rods).
The spring perches or the leaf springs would need changing.
Seems to me the rear end was roughly the same width or the 67 slightly narrower?
The rear end yoke probably needs changed?
But why use a 2.73 geared rear?
(unlessyou want that gear ratio)
Find a lower geared rear or even the rear disc setup?

The 75 rear end is around 2.5 inches wider.

Thanks for the input, John.
Oddly I was told my the guy who built the rearend for me that the later model Firebire rear was actually wider than the Nova one...? He may have been wrong. The '75 Nova one was a near perfect match to the original '40 rearend though... but that's not the question.... I diverge.
How did you know I went with a 2.73? I did! Chose a high gear because I have no overdrive and am not interested in racing... too much work so far to break something!
I did have a '72 Nova rear that turned out to be junk that was a monoleaf. But it was also an 8.2.
I see that Haus1313 lives in Georgia. I have a fellow in Sarasota, FL who does nothing but build rearends... and does good for a reasonable cost. He does ship also, and GA isn't too far away. If like, I can connect with you with him. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

The PU code rear end is for a 2.73 ratio.
The Firebird rear end is wider than the Nova I think?
