64 Catalina wont shift out of first....

64 Catalina conv..389 Auto.. won't shift out of first gear.. Is this trans worth messing with? Is this a common prob? Need help..new to Pontiacs

First, we hope there is fluid in the transmission.

If all is OK, then it is probably the transmission vacuum modulator valve. That is what controls the shifting based on engine vacuum. When the diaphragm in it ruptures, the lack of vacuum will prevent it from shifting.

Be sure to check that if there is any rubber hose on it, that the hose isn't damaged either.

The valve is on the passenger side at the rear. It will look like a small canister.

A new one should be available. Check with a transmission shop or a place like NAPA.

Many don't care for this transmission, but if it has worked this long, it is probably OK. Just don't take it to the drag strip and expect it to hold up for too long.
