Does anybody have any idea how many are still in existence? I saw one for sale, and the seller stated that only 20 are known be be around. Just wondering how accurate that is. _________________ |

I would be curious his source. Could you ask him? I do not know of any registry specifically for them. If the good old 10% rule was used that would be like 60+, right? I would think with their uniqueness more than an average car would have been saved. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

Larry, I can't remember where I saw that ad. I saw it within the last few weeks. I always heard about the 20/20 rule (20% after 20 years), is there a time frame attached to the 10% rule? _________________ |

I think the 10% is just what us interested in the older cars have thrown around for years. I have used it and also heard many others much smarter than me and well connected use it too. I think it's just another way of politely saying WAG.
It's odd that there is not now nor ever will be a real way of knowing these things. Too many people, too many cars, too big of a country to ever get a collective effort that would work. I bet places like Iceland know exactly how many of every car they have! I don't know of any '57 Fuelie guru around who might be able to help here. Have you ever looked to see if there is a specific '57 Fuelie group on Facebook? That would be a place to throw out the question.
Even if I added a Specialty Registry here, we would only be able to count those who responded. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

|

Another interesting question other than the number of existing '57 Bonnevilles is a look at the number of existing Bonnevilles requiring restoration. Over about two years, I have spoken to a few 57 Bonneville and 'Pontiac guys. Collectively, at our last count, we had eleven that are in some state of storage, requiring restoration or are in the process of restoration. What this really means is that there are eleven opportunities to build a '57 Bonneville properly with the appropriate restoration photo chronology, logs, receipts and research information. Far too often, some '57 Bonnevilles are offered with essentially little providence for big money. _________________ |

Thanks for the added info. It is difficult to know what might actually be out there. Every once in a while something pops up that hasn't been seen for years.
No doubt there are ones waiting for restoration, but some we've seen over the years are of the "jack up the data tag and back another car underneath it" type.
We only saw two at the 2022 Mecum Kissimmee auction (a red and a blue spear version). Sadly, over the years, the prices for these cars has been pretty flatline. They shot up to the $120K range many years ago, and have hardly climbed since. That puts the expense of a proper restoration in the "is it a wise investment?" category. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |
