I have a 63 grand prix, and i'm trying to pull the motor right now. It's just about ready to come out, but when I looked in the hole after pulling the starter the flexplate looks smooth like there's no bolts to hold it to the transmission (torque converter). I took off a small plate on the bottom of the bellhousing and when I look in there I can see some bolts but didn't want to take those off without checking first.
Thanks for any help!

If your car has the original transmission, all you will have to do is to unbolt all of the external bolts and slide the trans rearwards. |

Awesome, it's the original 389 and transmission. If its shifting a little hard between first and second should I take the trans in to have it checked? It feels like its sticking or something. It leaks pretty bad though so I don't know if that's why it's shifting hard. I don't know much about these transmissions. My dad bought it in the 80s and put like 1,000 miles on it since then. And it sat most of the time in the garage before now.
Thanks for the help so far!

Those transmissions are the weak link in that car. I would suggest that you take the car to a competent transmission technician who has knowledge of that unit and have them assess it before you remove it. |

Ahhh, motor is already torn down pretty far. I'll clean the motor up, put it back together, then do the transmission I guess.
A transmission shop can't do anything with a transmission while it's out of the car?? _________________ |

It can but it's better if they can drive it to see what it is doing. |

Any good place to get parts for this car? I need some motor mounts and a transmission mount, and a water pump. Transmission pan gasket and filter.
I saw some anchor aftermarket motor mounts but I had those on my truck for a short time before realizing they were too hard and causing a vibration in my steering wheel which I would rather not have in this car.
Thanks for any tips.

The Anchor motor mounts should be fine
The trans mount is not very easy to find. I believe that Ames Performance has them.
If you car is a 63, it could have a 4 or 8 bolt water pump. A local parts store should be able to find it.
Dave Edwards in Mass has the trans filter and gasket. His # is 781-449-2065. |

The motor is out and has some surface rust. Would I be better off just sanding it a little and priming/painting it? Or would it be better if I took everything apart and had it hot tanked?
Thanks! _________________ |
