|
|
I find it hard to believe that I cannot determine the temperature of my car engine because the temperature gauge on the dash does not work. So I need to know how to fix the problem that exist. Do anyone have an idea of the procedure and what part(s) I need?

It is pretty rare that a gauge actually ceases to function. It is uaually the sending unit. But first be sure to check the connections.
That being said, if this is an '00 model, there are other factors that could be at play here, being a "computer car".
Have you had a diagnostic run (ie: hooked up to a computer) to see if a code is shown?
Let us know what has been done so far to try to isolate the problem. |

Thanks for the reply, well nothing hasn't been done to isolate the problem. However, I received the code P0650-MIL Control Circuit Malfunction
MIL is Malfunction Indicator Lamp meaning the SES/CEL light circuits. but to my knowledge only ABS light remains on while car is on. I was told it could be the coolant sensor. _________________ |

I would suggest trying to replace the coolant sensor as I mentioned at first ("sending unit"). They are usually the problem. Try starting with the simplest item before thinking about tearing into the more complicated things.
Let us know what you do as you chase this problem. |

Where can I find the coolant sensor on the engine and how can I go about replacing it? Do you have any detail photo of the engine component? _________________ |

I have been doing some checking and the closest I can find (for now) is some GP info from a 1985 manual. It is for the 3.8 V-6 engine.
One point they make about the gage is to be certain that all contacts are clean and tight at the gage. They also mention a good ground at the gage.
Attached is a drawing showing the sensor location on the 3.8. It may be the same as your 3.1. If not, it should still help you in identifying the sending unit (sending unit, sensor, switch... all the same, just called differently). |

They simply unscrew and screw in a new one. Just a big pipe thread. |

Thanks for the reply! I was told before that coolant may pour out when unscrew. _________________ |

If you are wondering if you have the right sensor, the flood of coolant would actually be a good sign. Oil= not good! Coolant= good.
It would, of course, be a good idea to drain the radiator at least down to the level of the sensor location. Be sure to do when cool. |
