Anyone have a line on where I can get a flywheel for a 1957 Chieftain with 347ci engine and a Muncie M21 4 speed with close gear ratio? Will also be looking for a clutch kit as well but I understand that wont be as difficult to locate.
From what I have learned the flywheel on a 55-59 is smaller. I tried a flywheel from a 64 or later Pontiac V8 engine (standard V8 if there is such a thing) and it was too big. The bolt spacing did match up though.
The diameter of the Crank hub on my 347ci that the flywheel fits on is 2.593". The center hole of the "standard" flywheel is bigger.
Any help is appreciated. |

You mention that you believe the earlier flywheels are smaller. I have checked the Hollander Interchange Manual and it shows the 1955-57 as interchangeable. If it was a different size, it would usually contain a note to that effect.
Now you mention the "standard" flywheel center hole as being bigger than your crank end. Are you referring to a standard transmission flywheel as opposed to the crank on yours that is from an automatic? If so, that might be a problem- going from automatic to standard.
That might explain why the crankshafts of only the 1957 and '58 are shown as interchangeable, and with no mention of what type of transmission.
It appears that the switch from auto to stick is going to make the flywheel a custom item, unless there is some oddball replacement that someone who has gone through this before knows about. I'll do some more digging.
In the meantime, check our Automatic Transmission Technical Adviser, Steve Peluso, and give him a call. He has probably addressed this situation before. Look under "MEMBERS" above.
Also, check this article in our On-Line Magazine: http://www.pontiacregistry.com/members/online_magazine.php?view=1&article=56
While it may not be exactly what you are looking to accomplish, it may contain some info that could help. Also, the people the article is about may be open to answering some questions, providing some advice, or actually having part s that could work. It's worth a try! _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |
