The air filter cover on my 1950 Cheiftain says to clean the filter in kerosene (then do something with oil afterwards) every 2,000 miles. The rest of the instructions have faded over time. My question is two fold: First, after cleaning with kerosene what needs to be done with engine oil to the filter?
Second, can I skip this cleaning process and replace the engine filter element with a modern air filter element that will fit in the air filter canister? Fram or K&N? |

Most the old filters have a metal mesh in the top part and oil filled to some specified level inside. The cleaning is for obvious reasons, then one would lightly coat the mesh so the oil would hold the dust, etc. that might try to get in. The oil inside never really made a lot of sense to me. Perhaps it was just though the the general turbulence of air inside would drop materials into the oil. You can find air cleaner instructions in any of the earlier Pontiac Service Manuals we have posted in our On-Line Reference Library.
If you can locate a filter that will fit well (seal well) into your original oil bath housing, I would go for it. It's all just about keeping fine junk out of the carb.
NOTE: The Service Manuals tend to state that you do not need to (should not) coat the screen/mesh with oil as it will happen "automatically" during operation. Perhaps that is from fumes or such from the oil in the filter canister. I never soaked the mesh, just rubbed a small amount with a rag to "help it get started." Don't apply to the outside though unless you want your filter to look dusty and dirty from the outside, under hood. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |
