We had a question forwarded to us from a Pontiac hobbyist in Sweden concerning the transmission mount in his 1965 Bonneville.

His concern was that the original mount and the new replacement one did not look anything alike. So, there is only one real quick place to bounce that question to for an expert answer. That is our Automtic Transmission Technical Advisor, Steve Peluso up Boston way. It only took two seconds for Steve to provide the answer, and we thought we would share it here.

Here is the original question:

"He has a 1965 Bonneville and was having difficulty locating the right transmission mount. The strange thing is here's what his car has (left photo), yet all the Parts book say the right one as the right one.

As you can see the two mounts look nothing alike, even the bolt holes don't match up. Yes, I questioned him about the car and it does indeed have a Pontiac engine and Transmission. (TH400). I had thought perhaps he had a Canadian Pontiac as those came with Chevy engines and transmissions. So, I was bewildered by his issue as I've changed more than my fair share of transmissions and to me the mount he took off the car looked more like those used back in the day on Chevy's. I thought maybe you could dig around in your brain and books and come up with a answer as to how and why his Bonneville would have a different transmission mount than it calls for? According to him his Pontiac is unaltered and it came with that mount as OEM. Yet all the parts books say this isn't the right mount."

Here is the answer:

It's very simple.

The left mount is 1965 full-size only, but will fit 1965-1970. The right mount is 1966-1970, and is the service replacement for the 1965 mount. BTW, the bottom mount, when bolted in, looks like it is mounted on an angle. Both mounts will work perfectly on a 1965-1970 full-size Pontiac with either an automatic or manual transmission."

Guess what? There are more than one ways to skin a cat, as witness by the following information.

Our Swedish Pontiac friend discovered a "transmission" mount that will work perfectly for his '65 Bonneville transmission. And, it isn't even a transmission mount, but rather a motor mount. As a matter of fact, it isn't even Pontiac. Hold your nose... it is from Ford.

It is a left front 1966-74 Ford motor mount-- perfect match! You can see it at Woody's Auto Supply by clicking here: http://www.woodys-auto-supply.com/auto-part-details.asp?prod=ADM-2333&fb_source=message

Our friend tells us that not only does it fit perfectly, but it doesn't have the sideways fit of the Pontiac suggested replacement part.

Our thanks for sharing this information.
