Well, things have sort of ground to a halt for a bit.
Ran out of money, so I will be doing more of the free type stuff for a while. No welding or patching, unless I give the flux core a try. Might get desparate enough to try it, maybe cut some of the old firewall off that I will be replacing, and use that for practice.

I did get that firewall. It is missing the body mounting "brackets", but it is still well worth the $50 I paid for it. Plan for now at least is to just cut patches out of it since the original seems good on the top half and around the transmission tunnel.

Have to see if I can scrounge some scrap metal from work, but since they recyle it they don't like giving it away.

Well, was able to finally convince my wife that what I really wanted for Christmas was the wood to build that "rolltisserie" I mentioned a couple pages back. Couldn't get all the plywood I needed, but got the 2x6's and enough plywood for the bracing. So looking forward to getting that done soon.

Need to start doing some of the little stuff. Cleaning the few things I am reusing like the disk brake spindles, probably the rear end housing since I likely will have to live with the 8.2 for now. Stuff like that.

I also realised that I can do the wiring with the body off the car, just won't permanently attach it yet. But since I am essentially building my own custom harness, it will actually be easier doing it with the body off the frame.

Merry Christmas to all.

Got the rear of the rolltissorie almost done. Need more plywood so probably this weekend. It is another 4 day weekend for me.

I imagine most would build it and then install it, but I build on the car. To me it makes more sense, in case there is a problem I find out about it before actually doing the work and having to re do it. It is a little harder phsyically, but it's the way I like to do it.

Having a harder time deciding on where to mount the front one. I will probably end up using the lower wheel well (?) to the firewall mounting points. But I have to replace that part of the firewall and couldn't work on it if I use them. Thought about going higher on the firewall, but that would make this thing way off center, and I don't want to introduce any possible disasters. Will probably use them, and then do that part of the replacement with the car on jackstands. Which I really wanted to avoid cause I am old and fat and it hurts getting that low anymore.

Need to get some pictures, too busy working on it to think about it at the time.

Well, no real progress. I have been a bit under the weather and not feeling like being out in a cold garage.
I did buy a couple of things though. Bought a remote oil filter kit at the Summit Racing clearance this past weekend. And I bought a gallon of Rustoleum bare metal primer for the frame. And a gallon of I think it is called "Etch and Prep" at Home Depot. Same stuff (supposedly) as Picklex20 but a lot cheaper.

Oh, guess I forgot to mention that a nice person on another forum has lent me his spare air compressor and a gravity feed sandblaster. Very Happy Haven't gotten any media yet, but Tractor Supply Company has Black Beauty in the 50lb bag for around $8. So I really need to get going and make room in the garage for the compressor to stay for a while, and figure out where to blast the frame. Might take a while to blast, the compressor is an older Sears 5hp 30 gal vertical unit that does about 5cfm at 90psi. But the guy said he used one just like it to do some blasting, it was just slow. Well, I can handle slow. Can't handle spending hundreds of $ on a new compressor at the moment.

Thanks,
Russ

Probably don't have to warn you about making sure the blasting media doesn't get were it shouldn't. Have heard of those who blasted right around seals and moving parts surfaces. Not such a good idea.

Also, put down tarps and such to save and reuse the media. Down here in Florida I once had a small sand blasting outfit and just scooped up sand from the yard. Screened out the grass and junk and it worked fine.

Yep. That is part of the problem. Where to blast? Not worried about anything getting ruined on the frame, but would hate to be cleaning out sand from the garage for the next couple of years. Want to try to make some sort of tent to blast in, was thinking about plastic sheets but tarps sound better, but then that is another expense.

I am hoping to be able to reuse the sand. Not sure though, if I remember right the bag had something on it about 1 cycle. Saw some glass bead bags that had something like 20 cycles. I am assuming that means how many times you are supposed to be able to reuse the stuff.

Thanks,
Russ

If I was selling sand, I'd put "one cycle" on the bag too $$$!!! Go ahead and try reusing, it just might just not work as well. Prehaps use new sand for the frame and other heavier items, and "used" sand on smaller items like sheet metal which don't require as much ummph.

The plastic tarps are available at Wal Mart for super cheap. Just don't blast them direct and they should make a good sand blasting cage.

That's a good idea. I have enough empty cat litter containers to hold quite a bit of sand. Embarassed Been saving them just in case I ever needed something like them, guess I wasn't stupid after all.
Thanks,

Recycling the sand works great. Have done numerous times with great results. Pick you up a tarp like Larry stated and reclaim most of it back.

possibly one of the scariest things I have done with a car, and I have done some really crazy things.

WOWIE! ZOWIE!

That is cool, scary, but cool!

How many did it take to roll it? I would think the final resting position (either direction) is where you have to have a couple of helpers to "ease" it down.

What a nice way to work "under" a car. Great job!

ugh, I hate fat fingers on a laptop keyboard.

Take 2.

It was all just me myself and I. Don't have anyone around that could help. Might try to use the hoist when I am ready to put it down, and least as a safety. It would be a lot easier for someone in their 20's and who is in shape. I am 52 and about 100 lbs overweight. Embarassed Or to quote Dr. Smith from Lost in Space"the pain, the pain". Laughing

It rolled over pretty easily once I realised that one of the support legs for when it is in the normal position was too long by about half an inch and that was keeping it from moving.

I think I mentioned that I got the idea from someone on hotrodding.com who got it from a VW site. But it really works. I was surprised. Got about $100 or so into it, if someone had the wood already it is almost free. Plus I added a bit extra seeing as how this car is heavier than a fox body Mustang or a VW MK 1. Laughing

One bad thing is that I can't work on the firewall or the very rear of the car while it is on this thing. But that would be the case with a "real" rotissorie as well.
Another is wood and welding don't get along real well, so I will have to do something about that when the time comes.
And someone in the thread that I got the idea from mentioned termites. Shocked

Hoping to be able to spend some of the tax refund we have coming on some welding gas and wire, maybe even some sheet metal. But our refridgerator has picked this month to die. Sad Hoping I can just have it fixed, if I have to replace it there goes any extra car money.

Thanks,
Russ

Only my long stalled projects would have to worry about termites!

Welding-wise, just shield with a piece of sheet matel. The MIG is pretty accurate without the collateral damage of a torch.

On the plus side with the refrigerator pooping out... now you have the sheet metal you needed.

Keep us posted.

whoops, haven't updated here for awhile. Although not that much progress actually on the car, but a little bit in getting parts and tools.

We are getting a new refrigerator supposedly in a few hours. It was supposed to be delivered this past Wed. sigh. anyhow, on to important stuff.

I bought an electric radiator fan from a Lincoln MKVIII on ebay. Wasn't sure how it would fit on the universal aluminum radiator I have. Man, it fits almost like it was made for it. Mounting tabs need to come off, but otherwise really good fit.

I have also bought an electric metal shear from Eastwood. That thing works nice. And a large sized panel flanger. Haven't tried that one yet.

working on a diy serpentine belt drive and bought a crank pulley and a water pump pulley. Not sure if the water pump pulley will work, but it was around $9, so worth it to try. Someone else has done this on another forum and I am following his lead. His setup looks really good, not cobbled together. He used all junk yard pieces, I went with a new crank pulley because I am fat and lazy. Oh, and also because I never seem to get around to going to the pull a part in Akron.

I actually was going to go to Tractor Supply and buy an argon/co2 tank there today, but I can get twice the size for the same money at the semi local Praxair in Youngstown, I just need to wait on some more cash and then have to get there while they are open. Banker's hours? Really? What is it with welding suppliers, don't they like hobbiest types who need to go on a Saturday?

What else? I ordered a trunk pan (the $119 Goodmark one) and the bucket seat floor brackets today from Summit Racing. Had a coupon. They won't be in for about 2 weeks, but I can't afford the shipping so the wait for them to get to the Tallmadge store isn't a big deal. I already have one of the trunk floor braces, just not sure which side. Have to go out to the garage and take a look.

Got my mig welder on a real cart, finally. I bought the Hobart one from Tractor Supply for like $109. Not really impressed. Maybe I should have gone with the Harbor Freight one, but the Hobart can handle a larger welder in case I ever get one. Now I just need to get an argon/co2 gas cylinder and learn how to weld.

Oh, I also got an Edelbrock Performer intake. Not the RPM. It has "PONTIAC" under the Performer name. Hadn't planned to, but I had sent someone a deposit on some quarter panels and decided that the cost was too much with shipping, and was going to write off the deposit but the guy offered the manifold for a little bit more cash so I figured why not.

I was also supposed to be getting a different body from someone else semi local who was getting a GTO to replace the Lemans he is working on, but his deal fell through so he is keeping his Lemans. Although he did give me a set of rear control arms with newer bushings, and he is loaning me his spare air compressor. I gave him a trunk lid and he seems happy about it. I had actually met him from a craigslist ad, I was giving away my old GTO hood and he wanted one to cut up for an experiment. So craigslist isn't always evil. Laughing

I've been given a bunch of little stuff from a different local guy who is upgrading his car. He is the guy I bought the radiator and a pair of decent
4x heads from cheap. Newer rotors, front brake lines, front control arms with almost new bushings and ball joints, a stock 4barrel intake, etc. So this car might actually see the road again sooner than I have been thinking. Shocked

Did some more with the body Saturday. Long story short, I need a different/better body. sigh. This one would take replacing almost every single panel. And this one just isn't worth it.

So now I guess I will be concentrating on the chassis, since I have pretty much everything to put it together. And hope that sooner or later I can find and afford a body.
