HELP!!! My '95 Bird is down....The 'Optical Sensor' 4 wire connector cracked into a thousand pieces. This 'Connector' (GM part #12162861) is no longer available from GM. Can someone help me locate a distributor connector for the optical sensor type distributor? This type of distributor is also in use on the Camaro, Impala and Buick Roadmaster of the similar period. Any suggestions on a replacement? Please help.... [/b] |

I can't believe that GM doesn't stock something still (at least for car guys) so new.
I did some checking and you are correct that the other GM cars used the same thing. This opti distributor is manufactured by Mitsubishi (for Chrysler and Nissan also), so perhaps this could widen your search.
I think you could do well by calling a Chevy dealership, especially one that handles a lot of Vettes. On an LT1 site a question about a broken connector was asked (sorry with no reply), and the person said he just got off the phone with his local Chevy dealer who had not only the connector, but the entire harness with it. He wanted to know if the $2.00 connector was able to be "restuffed" with his wires and how difficult that might be. That might be a problem, at least if you don't want to cut all your wires to slip on a new conector. It is usually difficult to reinstall the pins and such when a connector is damaged.
As an idea, we have local specialized automotive electrical shops. I bet they have run into things like this. Check around. You might have to sneak into the work bay and quiz a good mechanic.
Please let us know what you find out. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

Hi Larry,
My cousin is the parts manager of a local Chevrolet dealership. That is where I got the part number and 'part discontinued' information. The problem is that the manufacturers are only required by law to carry parts for 10 years for a particular model. GM stopped using this type of distributor in 1998 and moved to a 'distributorless' ignition system for the LT-1. Do you remember the Corvette guy's letter and what Chevy dealer he purchadsed the connector from? I figured that someone might have these still in their stock. I have asked my cousin to do a systemwide search in his system but theirs is only a regional database and not countrywide. Any help with a contact would be appreciated. Thanks. |

DRAT! I guess Chevy isn't going to be any help, unless of course one could find one still in a bin somewhere.
The other posting I found didn't have any area identification with it.
There has to be an answer for this. Have you thought about contacting a wire harness place? They certainly have to address issues like this. Lectric Limited is listed in our "AFFILIATES" "Member Discounts" section. Perhaps they can help.
Are you going to be able to retrofit a new connector to your existing wires/terminals? _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

Hi Larry,
I have already contacted Lectric Limited about this but they have not yet responded. Hopefully, I may hear something from them tomorrow. I'll keep trying everywhere as I have to get the 'Bird' back on the road!
Thanks for your help! |
Regards,
Joel |
