I'm going to be replacing my leaking convertible top lift cylinders soo on my 69 Firebird. The GM repair manual calls for Type A auto tranny fluid but I can't find it anywhere. Does anyone know if there is a current substitute for Type A that won't screw up my top pump or the cylinders? |

I just read a similar question in another source that mentioned in 1961 Ford superceded Type A fluid with Type F. That isn't much help though as Type F is hard to find too.
This was all in reference to power steering, but still related. They suggested just using a "modern" power steering fluid, but being sure to completely flush out the entire system of the old fluid.
Mostly all hydraulic systems just need a good quality light weight fluid. Most variations usually only had to do with addatives and such. The only real dangers are if the additives are too srtong for the durameter of the rubber used in a system's seals. But generally in any automotive application there was little harm in using any of the fluids.
I knew a Pontiac nut (a REAL NUT!) who never used Dextron or any GM fluids in his transmissions. He used Type F Ford fluid because he said it kept the transmission cleaner.
If you have any questions, check with a local hydraulic shop and have them recommend a fluid that they would consider "mild" and easy on seals. Some people recomment brake fluid, but it attracts water (moisture) and also if it leaks or you spill... kiss your paint goodbye.
Just don't do what a friend did in the Air Force and put jet engine oil in anything. He put it in his car and ripped out all the seals... but it was sure clean inside when we took it apart.
Bottom line, I would go with power stering fluid or a hydraulic shop recommendation of a very not detergent fluid (to protect your seals). But be sure to first flush the system to be extra sure and cycle the top a good number of times to clear out any air; then refill.
If you still have questions, perhaps these two places shown below can make a suggestion (or provide fluid):
