It seems that the after market intake manifolds stop short of 1962. Is there a reason as to why they don't fit an early 389?

You can find earlier intakes if you look around. I see them pop up on ebay once and a while. Recently I saw a 1960 6x1 manifold for sale. it was awesome.

Also, you can always use a later set of heads to get the manifold you want. Say a set of 1965 heads to utilize a later 2x4 intake.

I also know of one person who fitted an earlier 3x2 intake to a later (post 1965) set of heads. By the time he was done, it would have been cheaper just to purchase a new intake manifold.
