I would like to put power steering in my 55 non power steering car. I have located a 56 with power steering ,do I have to remove the entire steering column? Besides the pump and pulley and lines,is there any thing else I need to salvage? Is this doable? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

A quick look at the Hollander Interchange Manual doesn't give good news.
The 1954 and '55 were interchangable, but not the 1956. Checking the '55 Service Manual and that '56 Service Manual it is obvious why. They are quite different beasts.
Now, that being said... anything is possible. But, in your case I am not sure if it would involve including the entire steering column, and on down. You had better check the geometry on the pitman arm too.
I had power steering on a '54 Star Chief and it worked great. It even had a good "artifical feel" to it... unlike some of the old MOPARS and mid-60s GM cars that felt like the steering shaft wasn't even hooked to anything!
If you can check the '56 system thoroughly, it may work; but with the number of '55s around to donate parts from, why not just wait for the easiest possible conversion?
Keep us posted. |
