From all my years of reading questions like this and seeing the "experts" responding, it always comes right back to just a good old guess. The way they go about guessing is by first stating that this car is now nearly 40 years old, and back when it was only 10 years old nobody really cared about if it was ever going to be collectible- it was transportation. And, as such it would reach that majic age where it was not worth maintaining to use as a driver, and it wasn't a collector prize yet either. Therefore, few were saved. So how many might remain then? How many pancakes does it take to cover a dog house roof? Who could know.
But, here's what you do. First, you know they don't all exist yet. Second there is no way half (2928) of them could remain; that would be unheard of considering rust, accidents, bad mechanicals, etc. So, third, could one fourth (1464) of them remain? Well that's possible, but not probable. But we might be getting closer to a believable number. In all actuality, probably somewhere around 10-15 % "could" remain, so let's go with the high side of 15% (878) just for grinns. Now, average together what we believe could be a close-to-correct number (878) with what could be a maybe number (25%, or 1464) and we come up with a number of 1171.
Is this a number to take to the bank. No. But is is kind of the gut-feeling way of coming up with a "reasonable" guess.
Anyone else have a guess.... no, not about the car, I need to know about the pancakes and the dog house roof!

Thats how many "might" exist, out of that number how many are pristine, roadworthy, restorables, or just sitting in the junk yard getting picked over? As for the dog house is that for a Great Dane or Dachshund?

Usually when playing this sort of numbers guessing game, we consider the "still alive and kicking" bottom number to be ones that are "saved". Perhaps not restored to #1, but not a parts hulk in the bone yard.
As for the number of pancakes to cover a dog house roof, since we're trying to be cautious, let's go middle of the road and think perhaps beagle. Don't ask "hip" or "gable" either!
