I am writing an article about the Fisher Body/Pontiac plant at 900 Baldwin Avenue in Pontiac, Michigan. The article is almost complete; however I am searching for some information that I thought would be easy to find, but is proving to be quiet difficult to find. I would like a list of Pontiacs that were built at this plant. I know that the Bonneville and Grand Prix were built there in the 1970s; and of course the Fiero was the last car built there (in the Fisher Body plant), but I can not find any information regarding other cars built there. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I went to the top of the top when it comes to Pontiac information, John Gunnell, and asked the question about this palnt.

He said that trade journals published "state" production numbers, but he has not seen any figures from individual plant buildings.

This is probably the kind of information you can only get with a trip there or by meeting some old timer who worked there.

Let us know how you progress.

I actually did go there. I got as far as the gate. Someone from the plant came out to meet with me. He stated (and I have confirmed with other sources) that the plant is used as a warehouse since shortly after the Fiero production ceased. He also said that there is no one on site that was present when the plant was producing cars and therefore there was no one who could answer my questions about the plant, including which cars were assembled there.

I have other feelers out and I am hoping that some older GM worker or ex-GM worker, will come forward with information.

Thanks.

Any more leads on the article you are writing? I am sure it will be interesting and educational for all of us.

Thanks.

I haven't received any other information on which cars were built there. I have an inquiry sent to Old Cars Weekly and a friend who works at the Proving Grounds is checking into it for me. I find it extremely difficult to believe that no body has information as to which cars were built at this plant.

Just a shot in the dark, but is there a Historical Society or perhaps county records that might give some clues?

I checked with the Historical Society; however they were unable to provide the requested information. I haven't checked the county records.

I did talk to John. In fact, he reviewed this article for me and provided valuable information. Unfortunately he was not able to provide information regarding the cars that were built there. I do not know Jim Mattison, nor do I know how to contact him.

The aspact of the passing of the Fiero is that it surpassed Pontiac and GM's sales expectations during the first few years, and then, Roger Smith decided that somehow they couldn't sell enough of them so the Fiero had to go. Ironically, due to technology and platform sharing, the Solstice (a car I like) is kept in the lineup despite selling in quantities less than the sales quantities of the Fiero.
