Hi Jessie,
Wow, that phone message was confusing...
I did manage to contact the fellow by phone who left the message. He is the son of the woman who owns the barn. Rick was formarily married to his sister. They are all on good terms, so there is no problem there.
The engine is still in thier barn. They want me to come and look at the engine and relay the information to you. If you decide that you want it, they will move it to Rick's shop/garage/service station.
This dude told me that someone had recently stolen some parts off of the engine, and he is not sure how complete it is. Our plan is to meet Monday morning at 9AM, so I can see it in person for the first time. Than he said that there is a Jeep engine in the barn also, and that the parts may have been stolen off of that engine. The bottom line is that this fellow does not know one engine from another. To him, those engines are all just scrap metal.
This whole deal may turn into a big steaming pile of poop. I sure hope not. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the engine is still complete, and in decent condition. If some stuff has been stolen, hopefully it is nothing important.
Either way, I will post what I find out Monday morning before going to bed. I am at work at the community hospital tonight, and have to work at the Tribal Hospital Monday night. My plan is to go see the engine in the am, then post the info here prior to going to bed. Maybe we will know something in the morning?
Are you still interested in the engine if it turns out to be just a short block, or a block and heads? I told him that I will have to ask you, and if you are interested, the price will have to be lower. He said no problem.
I sure hope that it is the Jeep engine that has parts stolen off of it...

Sounds like a mess. Well if the block is the right casting number and can be rebuilt and used that's fine we can work out a deal, if the heads are on it and they are the right casting number and can be rebuilt that's fine too. I would like pictures before I make the 20 hour round trip if possible to make sure it's what I need. All the other parts I can find. Let me know what you find out. Thanks again and merry Christmas. _________________ "make it 300 and you got yourself a automobile race" |

Hi Jessie,
This ended up as a wild goose chase. I am so sorry that I got your hopes up. Please understand that I was mislead also.
We drove as far into the property as we could in a 4x4. Then we hiked up the side of the mountain with large trees and vines so think we had to cut our way through it. Once we reached the barn, there is a complete engine sitting just inside the door on a crate just like Rick told me it would be. The building looks no one has entered it for several years, as it is filled with spider webs. I am glad it is winter and cold enough for the snakes to be hibernating right now.
The problem is that the engine is a 360 Jeep engine complete with the air injection reactor tubes still in place. I verified the casting numbers and identified the engine as a 1985 model. It came from a Wagoneer. The intake manifold has AM for American Motors, and the engine wears the original teal green paint. The sad part is that painted in yellow touch up paint accross the top of the right hand valve cover is "Pontiac 421."
We searched the rest of the building and found a Ford Windsor block 351-2V engine in pieces. If there was a Pontiac engine in there at sometime in the past, there is no sign of it now. I suspect that someone got confused a long time ago and mis-labled that Jeep engine. Since then, the engine was assumed to be a Pontiac engine.
Rick told me that he had validated the block casting mumbers as a 421 Pontiac engine. I think now that he made up most of what he told me, and it was mostly BS. The other fellow Evan told me that Rick is bad to tell big BS stories. I don't know him that well.
Again, I am so sorry this turned out like it did. I feel sort of stupid right now for falling for a complete load of crap. Rick was telling me what I wanted to hear, and I fell for it hook, line, and sinker.
I will keep my eyes and ears open for a 421 engine. I know lots of gear-heads, and one may just turn up.
I look forward to watching your build.
Merry Christmas
