For 55-56 Pontiacs the standard size plug was an AC-Delco 44. These are now discontinued.
Any advice on a good plug to replace the 44's?
Is there now a standard plug that anyone is using?
Thanks for any info.

I made a quick call to our neice who works at an auto parts store and she gave the following replacements for the #44s:

AC DELCO R43
AutoLite #303
Champion #841

The old #44s are still available in some places, but these shown are "box store" items so they will not cost an arm and a leg because they won't be "vintage", or god forbid "classic" parts.

Can you still get the R44 plug?

When I did some searching I found the R44s, but it was in private sales. I do not think they are really available in the local stores any longer.

I wonder if NAPA has any through their old parts sources. They used to have a lot of stuff going way back, even if they had to bring it in from other warehouses.

When I was restoring my '40 Pontiac and also driving a '41 Cadillac Deluxe Club Coupe as almost a daily driver (those were the fun days!) in the early '80s I got exhaust parts, ignition items, and lots of suspension stuff from the Milwaukee NAPA dealer (albeit their main store for the area). They usually got it from what they said was a large warehouse with lots of old parts in Michigan.

I have no idea if they will still help this way. The parts counter guys had to kind of like you and identify with the older cars to "find the time" to help.
