Does the 7K3 cylinder head have any good performance characteristics? I am asking in reference to a street application.
A friend is purchasing a 1972 Formula 400 car. Considering using the 7K3 heads that are already on the car. |

Larry Cooper told me they are damn close to the same heads as the casting 48. Both have 2.11 and 1.77 valves. Only downfall they have that I know of is they don't have a hole for one header bolt on each head.
My 81 has a set of 7K3 heads on it. Haven't had a moments problem out of them. Very good performance wise as well! _________________ Thomas Horn

Thank you for the information. Good to know.
Can a guy drill and tap the heads for a header bolt on each side? Will it create problems by doing so? I know some heads like the 7F6 are similar. A guy can drill and tap the head to run another bolt to seal things up.
Might just run Ram Air manifolds on the engine. Should make the '72 run plenty hard.
Thank you |

Jeff I've heard of people on the PY Board drilling and tapping a hole...they say you just have to be careful and know what your doing. _________________ Thomas Horn

sorry buddy, no I do not need a picture...I have a set of the heads myself if you would have read the above post I made, you would be aware of that.
If I ever I can find one that has been done I'll let you know.
I may be mistaken, but I thought I remembered seeing someone drill one. If not, oh well.

Took the time this morning to contact Selden Ruwwe, a retired independent business man that lived for Pontiacs most of his life. Selden stated that the 7K3 head was a decent D-port head. He stated the casting not having the tapped hole for the exhaust. Unlike other early 70's heads, the 7K3 can not have a hole drilled and tapped according to Selden.
With the mild combination we are planning to run, he suggested our earlier idea, running Ram Air D-port manifolds. We want a dependable engine we can run everywhere. We wanted to use the 7K3 heads simply because they are already on the 400 in the Formula.
Looks like manifolds it will be. Hopefully we can easily get the Firebird in to the 13's in the 1/4-mile. If not that, low 14's. It is all for fun anyway you look at it.
Thank you guys for the information you passed on to me in the earlier responses.
Thanks |

Thanks Thomas and Bruce for the idea to run a bracket on the heads. Looks very simply to fabricate. If for some reason we decide to run headers, we can easily make one.
Scott may change his mind. When it is all said and done, he might want a 12-second street machine. Never know.
Thanks |

Yes Sir Mr. Fulper!
I'll let you know what I find.
Some have drilled and helicoiled the hole then installed a stud in it... _________________ Thomas Horn
