To me, it seems like all the Azteks have been sucked right off the streets here in my area ( your area may be different).

While walking down the streets of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, it became obvious that they seem to have been scooped up and sent to PR to work as Taxi cabs.

You never know!

Now that you mention it, where have they gone? I realize there weren't a bunch of them sold, but down here (Florida west coast) you would see one a day. Now I haven't seen one for probably months. Did PMD secretly buy them all back.

With the trend in little box-cars that are so ugly, they are cute, how could PMD have missed by so much? That was just an ugly car, no matter what anyone says. It might have been a heck of a good quality vehicle, and a heck of a utilitarian vehicle, but still hardly anyone wished to be seen in one. If PMD is paying for study groups, they are wasting their money. How about before tooling up a design, they fly a few of us hobbyists to MI? We will tell them what will fly and what will not. I'll gladly go.

I still see a lot of Buick Rendezvous Aztek spin-offs. Why are they around..... because they look good!

My father (who is also a car guy) had an answer to those who, every time they saw an old vehicle, would say "Boy, I'll bet that's worth a bunch of money." They are the same ones who, if they ever wind up with an old car (usually some beat up middle-age 4-door sedan inherited from old Uncle George), will quickly put an ad in the local paper at some astronomical price and boldly claim "Classic for sale!"

My father would say about the collectability and value of cars "If it was popular THEN, it will be popular NOW or in the FUTURE." But, remember, he was not referring to "popular" as in terms of what sold the most-- that would probably be 4-door sedans. He meant "popular" as in "Man, would I ever like one of those!"-- that would be convertibles, 2-door hardtops, sports cars, high performance cars, etc.

He is so right, too. Just because something is old, doesn't make it valuable or even collectable. Now that isn't to say that a little 4-door sedan low-end Pontiac (like my little '40) won't be valuable some day. It will, and it is certainly more valuable than it was in 1979 when I bought it. But, I still wish it was a '40 Torpedo convertible or a Woodie Wagon.

So Aztek lovers rejoice, your time will come to have a valuable, sought-after vehicle... just probably not in your lifetime. But, perhaps I will be proven wrong. After all, in my lifetime I never expected to see VW bugs selling for $20,000.00+... what a world, huh?

I have recently spotted a few Azteks at the local railroad station. Azteks are now affordable 'BEATERS'. I drove a few. They weren't bad at all for local driving, it was just the looks or stares that you would get.

I still can't get over the rear spoiler they added on the "sports" model. The spoiler sat on the middle of the hatch lid. Being in the middle, the spoiler was the only thing you saw in the rear view mirror.

GM designers had to do well in college in order to get their jobs. How could they be so dumb?

After 30+ years in the graphic arts world, I learned a lot; but one of the most important things I learned was that there were very few, very successful deviations from the norm.

That being said, how can great designs shoot through the average clutter without taking a chance. Well, they can, and they do, but not without danger and sometime flat-on-your-face failures, as with the Aztek.

How many lousey television commercials did you sit through just to see "Where's the Beef?" or "I can't believe I ate the whote thing." Think about the Super Bowl commercials. Most that work the best are those that don't try to reinvent what people already accept, just find a new way to present it.

When you decide to walk that fine line between butt-ugly and "so ugly it's cute" you are on a dangerous path. Even VW found that out when they thought the new VW would set the world on fire; it was hot for a very short while, then people got tired of it.

I'm guessing the Aztek will develope a cult-like following just like the big ugly caprices did with the young kids, but unfortunately that was not PMDs original goal.

It just never ceases to amaze me that with all the millions that get spent to tool up for a new car, something like the Aztek can sneak through. Is everyone so scared for their jobs in GM that nobody has the marbles to stand up and say "the king has no cloths"? As a marketing friend used to say when things were passed around for review "every dog has to pee on it". The next time a bad idea gets passed around for review at PMD perhaps someone should do more than pee on it!
