Greetings.
I have a 49 Silverstreak with the straight 8 and hydramatic transmission. The transmission has a leaking front seal. Question is, I have another parts engine and transmission. From what i was told it was from a early 50's. I am wondering how would I find out if that transmission would fit into my 49. I am looking to take it to a transmission shop to have it rebuilt.
I have another place that will swap the transmission. Reason why I would like to have the other transmission rebuilt is both shops are busy. I would rather have the transmission guy do it but he wouldn't be able to swap it out until fall. However, he can rebuilt it sooner. So, does anyone know if they are pretty much interchangeable or know how I could find out.. sorry so long winded... _________________ Slow down and enjoy life. Because life is way to short. In the Hollander Interchanger Manuals it shows as "complete transmission swaps" only 1948-1950 as compatible. However, I remember a young couple when I lived in Wisconsin who had swapped later transmissions into their earlier Pontiac (I forget the actual years) in order to gain the extra drive gear.
Anything is possible, but this may take a lot of research to find all the bits and pieces to make it work.
If you do a Google search there are a ton of transmission adapter places. One place to check might be Speed Gems. I see a lot of early Oldsmobile stuff but not much Pontiac stuff. Perhaps a phone call might get you some information.
