My car came from number of places before it became my. It life ended in
Delware 1984. Where it sat for number of years. From there it was purchased by a man in Rapid City, Michigan. It was suppose to be father son project but the son never took interest. I just happen to come across this owner by luck as I was networking to find my dream car. The owner actually wanted 4500 for the car. I felt this was to much and ask for lower price of 2500 seeing how I was unable to see the car and make any real good judgement of it condition for sale. But the owner let me have the car for the price for it did not run, but was thought to be able to if the carb was rebuild. After my analysis of the engine below I found the engine to be junk and just more cost than I was ready to take on. So I went to networking to find a engine. In my heart I really wanted a 326 but realizing the cost of fuel and that the four cylinder was really a collector item. To haul the car from Michigan to California it costed me non operation cost of 1100 dollar to be transported. Which added to the cost of my car. Only after I really started looking at the body did I realize that I had my work cut out for me. The inside fender was patch on both sides just in front of shroud. Both sides had cut piece of sideing cut and molded cover the corr. and then was spray painted black so that it would not be seen. As well I was told the car had been repainted. Well that was the truth but the paint only was to cover all the east coast salt and corr.
In 31 Aug 2004 My car was in a very bad condition which was 63 lemans, attached are picture of outside surface of corrosion outside Rocker Panel.( I have many others but just limited to this story)During my restoration I had planned to just replace the under floor brace which seemed to have the corr. But during restoration, I found that the whole interior of the rocker panel is Corr. as well both shrouds and the right side rocker system. The upper floor Rocker is in fine shape. It seems the area hit the hardest is a little canal between the rocker panels which is membrane. It seems past owner had some body man to wade up masking paper, and other debrie into the canal which prevented the water to drain from the structure. It has both walls gone from the front and spits at the bottom as you move back along the track of the drain canal. I had to read network the specifications to repair.
I found East Coast auto salvage to be a great supplier for my rocker Assy. Which at the time costed 265.00 rocker assy. Repair this cancer which is within my baby Lemans. I had to find solutions and ideas from any other members and very determination to find what was needed.
The Engine was not much better As a result I had again to resort to networking get help and make decisions. I managed to find engine from a very good man in Columbus Ohio, who sold me replacement engine for 500.00. Serio, Pete Performance Pontiac. Thank you so much Pete.
1. I did a compression check of my engine, the results are not looking so good to me but I would like your option.
First all I was not able to warm the engine up per procedure before doing the test.
The car had not been run for a very long time. I took all the spark plugs out and poured WD-40, when I switched the engine on it turn over very quickly. Of coarse all the plugs are out. Before starting my compression test I put all the plugs back in except for the one testing.
My result of the test as I did them are as follows.
#1 Cylinder 40 psi
#2 Cylinder 60 psi
#3 Cylinder 60 psi
#4 Cylinder 40 psi
Fuel level sender problem
2. Would happen to know what the ohm rating should be for the fuel sender for the 63 lemans. I have purchased new one which is not made for lemans, and want to rebuild my old one. I am going to test it but just wanted to see what you think. The one that is in the car now reads 1/4 tank with it empty. no one has a new replacement for the car so this why I am going to rebuild my old one it is not very complicated.
The cost restoration costed me $11000 the appraised value by underwritter of my insurance company gave me $19000. The car is going to go to my grandson. I was told by many collectors to let the car go but I could not bear to let it go only faith and determination that kept me going with good people such POCI helped me get through. Thank you all in my local community services to professional support as well as the networks of auto salvage yards who keep old cars for us who want to take on the impossible. |
