I have a 57 Chieftain with a three speed steering column shift. The shifter is worn and would not so the owner before me had a floor shifter installed. My question is there anyone that sells the parts to rebuild the column shifter, or would parts from a Chevrolet of the same year work? Also I do have a 1955 Pontiac with the shifter on the column, would it work in my 57? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! |

The shifter assemblies are usually sloppy because of spring (wave) washers, plastic washers, spring pins, etc. wearing out in the top shift lever area. Below, the shift rods have bushings on the ends and they also wear out. All of these items can usually be replaced after a tear-down with off-the-shelf items, often right from a good hardware store and local parts house.
If, however, you find specialty items are needed, check with CPR (California Pontiac Restoration (see ad at right), or Kurt Kelsey Pontiac Parts (find under "AFFILIATES" then "Member Discounts").
Do an eyeball check of your '55 vs. '57 shift assembly and see if they are the same. But, age-wise both would probably be in the same condition. The Hollander Interchange Manuals do not cover just linkage interchangeability. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |
