Am pulling the 400 in my niece's '76 Trans Am to "freshen up" a tired engine. We're hoping the cylinders aren't egg-shaped to avoid cost of boring and new pistons. It doesn't burn any oil now, and it isn't going to be a race car either. If the crank needs turning, that will be OK. Certainly the heads will be thoroughly gone through as I think that is the main cause of its poopy-ness.
Question, as we are going through so much, a nicer cam would be a neat addition. It has been so long ago since I built the 400 in my '69 custom wagon, I cannot recall the cam I used. It was a High Energy one and in what street-speak might think of as 3/4-race. It has just the right amount of rumpity-bump to let you know it isn't stock, and shakes the fenders just about right.
Now, the $10,000 question. What would be a good recommended cam to use for this car to achieve this sort of result? Naturally it will remain hydraulic, 1.5 rocker ratio, and we will replace all the lifters with new too. Don't need rocker stuff either.
Also, should one trust old cam bearings, even if it has very good oil pressure?

Hi Larry,
I will speak to Lee Jay Ruwwe in reference to the 400 you are wanting to wake up.
There are a lot of camshaft choices out there now.
What rear gears does the car have?
Leaving the transmission converter stock?
Is it the original 400?
Get ahold of you soon. |

Hi Jeff,
I don't know the rear ratio, but it is stock, as is the original 400. Yes, we will leave the converter alone. Trying to do on a bit of a budget, and really, good performing stock specs will be plenty of oomph. Just thinking a worn out cam is very possible, and since we are going through a complete tear down, it is a cheap addition.
Thanks,

Hi Larry,
If the car is all original, the gear ratio should be fairly easy to determine. There is an axle code located on the front of the axle tube. The code should be on the passenger side axle tube.
PS - 2.41 posi
PU - 2.73 posi
PW - 3.08 posi
PX - 3.23 posi
LD - 3.23 posi
This will be a factor in picking a cam for the heavy TA. They are definitely not light. |
