1964 Catalina

PostPosted: Mon Dec 23, 2013 5:48 pm    Post subject: 1964 Wiring Harness Repair Reply with quote

My 64 Catalina sports coupe has melted insulation around the wiring for the ignition (key hole) just behind the dash. The wiring still functions and there are no other issue with he harness. Is there a place where I can find a repair piece (such as the pigtail and 5-6 inches of wiring) to correct this? I've tried a few places, but they only sell whole harness'.

Thanks!

Just a thought, but if the wiring is otherwise good, with just melted plastic, why not slip a couple of layers of shrink tubing (one layer at a time) over each individual wire. Use a heat gun to shrink. Then to be extra save, you can either wrap with good tape, or even use liquid tape on everything.

Now, this is assuming that you can get each wire out of the plug on the back of the switch, and perhaps even have to remove and replace the individual contacts. I have seen procedures where "they" (?) show how to remove contacts from things like light switches. I would assume an ignition switch would be the same.

Obviously the main thing to investigate first would be why this happened and be sure it doesn't happen again.

Another thought would be finding a parts car they you or someone would cut off a good length of these wires. Then carefully splice in the replacement wires with solder and shrink tube, etc. Check with Steve at Indiana Pontiacs. He gets in lots of parts cars of your vintage. Look under "AFFILIATES" and then "Member Discounts" for Steve's contact information.
