Early Pontiac Racer

Ernest "Bill" Lehman

The early 20th century saw America’s fascination with the automobile grow beyond just rudimentary transportation and into sport. Just like during the horse and buggy days, it wasn’t long before bravado turned into actual competition. Many of the pioneers during this early time aren’t well-known names, but local characters– the guy (or even gal) next door– who trotted off to work like everyone else, but became the racing dare devil at night and on weekends.

Most of these forerunners to the big business of auto racing today would not be remembered if not for family, friends, and dedicated historians who decide to document their exploits. One such racing pioneer caught our attention as he was– at least during much of his earlier years– a diehard Pontiac fan too. This was Ernest “Bill” Lehman (1907-1969) of Nickerson, Kansas.

In our PontiacRegistry.com On-Line Magazine we have a full story about Pontiac racer Bill Lehman along with many great old time race photos.
