Good afternoon Pontiac experts. I have been trying to find an exhaust and intake manifold. Yes, Mission Impossible. In searching, I have found different possible engines for my 1937 Pontiac Business Coupe CA6. I thought it was a 216, but being built in Pontiac Michigan it could have a Canadian engine also. Apparently it could be a 216 (216.48 CI), or a 223 (222.7 CI) or also a 224. Every exhaust manifold I find is not configured like mine. I hopefully have included a picture. Any thoughts? |

From 1926 through 1936 the Canadian Pontiacs were pretty much U.S. versions, including the engines. In 1937 that all changed and the U.S versions were the Pontiac engines and the Canadian Pontiacs were Chevy engines. These were the Model 224 named after the Chevy engine displacement. These were all build in Oshawa, Ontario and would (should) carry a data plate on the firewall indicating such. If yours was a Chevy engine, it should be an OHV engine.
All this info is from a Canadian book covering many cars, including Pontiac.
Where did you find the "CA6" designation? The serial numbers should begin as "6CA" if built in Pontiac, MI. A "C" prefaced those built in Southgate, California, and an "L" for those built in Linden, NJ.
According to your engine number, it would appear to be a flathead Pontiac 6. The engine numbers for 1937 began with 6-220001 and ended with 6-399286.
Your manifolds seem to confirm this. They look very similar to those that were on my '40 six and most others I have seen. Sadly the Hollander Interchange Manuals do not cover the manifolds of these earlier Pontiacs. The Parts Manual does, however, show the intake and exhaust as being the same for 1937 and 1938. A visual comparison to other later years may prove others to fit, but with differences that would change the part numbers.
You are correct in the "Mission Impossible" of very close. If damaged a good cast iron welding repair might be a good idea, if possible.
We hope this helps a bit. Happy hunting. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

My error, yes 6CA. The block has GM (between the ribs), but also has the Indian head. I had several guys tell me the manifolds are not repairable, but one in PA says he will try anyway. I am hoping he can work some magic since he is my last hope. I tried some foundries, but no one wants to touch a one-off piece. I have to believe there is someone out there that would forge some reproductions, but I have not found them yet. I was thinking possibly a Canadian engine only because the carburetor guy told me he had to source the rebuild parts out of Canada. The car was built in Pontiac, but it wasn't sure it meant the engine was also. From your info it sounds like it is the 216, and all the guys on the web with 216 manifolds have something else, or at least different than mine. |

The Indianhead on the block cinches up that it is genuine Pontiac.
Have you tried scrap yards? Perhaps Windy Hill or French lake both in Minnesota. There is also an RPM Motorsports in MN that has old cars.
Have you checked with our Flathead tech Advisor? Maybe he has some info that could help you. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |
