I have a 1940 Arrow. So basically the Canadian made version of the Silverstreak. It has the Chevy engine/ transmission/ chassis. Has anyone converted the column shifter to a floor shifter? What was needed to have that done? My transmission is a GM 591092. I know the purist are not going to like the idea but I’m not a purist. I’ve checked with Summit but they don’t have a conversion kit available for my car.

When I bought my '40 Pontiac in 1979, someone had put a floor shifter in it. But it was the Pontiac transmission and driveline, not the Chevy (Canadian) as yours.

I would think early Chevy floor shifters would be around. Check with Hurst and Foxcraft.

Here is something I found in a hot rod web forum (HAMB) that might help:

“KINGSHIFT” for Cad, LaSalle, Olds, Chevy, Ford, Mercury, Pontiac. We are the home of the famous "KINGSHIFT" floor shift unit for the early 3 Speed Standard Transmissions. Our shifter was the "KING" of all the shifters. It utilizes 3/8” shifter rods and ¼” steel welded brackets. The shifter arms were hand machined on a Bridgeport Milling Machine, hardened and cadmium plated. First is to the Left & forward and second was back and to the right, which took advantage of the force produced by the acceleration of the car giving you lightning fast spring loaded shifts just by slapping the handle into second. Third was straight up and out of the way. Due to our unique design you could adjust the length of the handle and bend it cold to your choice. You could use a shorter handle for drag racing and even remove the handle when you parked your car or at the Drive-In-Movie Theater. We have units for early Cad, Olds, La Salle, Chevy, Ford, Mercury, Pontiac, etc. Build your “Street or Rat Rod” with the FAMOUS "KINGSHIFT" and be part of History. Check in the WHAT'S NEW section on page 20 in June 1962 Hot Rod Magazine. $349. Call Tom King 1 609 397-0161 or TheKingCO1947@AOL.COM

I've been looking some more. One think I realized is the Kingshift article is old. Still worth trying to contact.

I wonder how many tabs your transmission has. It might be possible to just retrofit some other 3-speed just making mounting brackets for your particular application.

I have been looking for Foxcraft and Sparkomatic units. But I think both are very cheaply made shifters. Have you thought about calling Hurst? I find it hard to believe that there were no floor shift conversions to the early Chevys.

If it helps in your search, I checked, and the Chevy 3-speed transmission was the same from 1940 through 1948.

Thanks Larry I got a hold of the Kingshift guy through Ebay. He is trying to help me figure out if the kit he has for sale will fit my transmission. I also contacted Chev's of the 40's and just waiting to hear back from them. Thanks for you help and I will keep you updated.
