The nearest I can tell using the "GTO/GT-37 Illustrated Identification Guide" by the late Eric White is that the "24217" is an obvious reference to 1966 GTO 2-door hardtop (model designations as on the VIN also).

The "223" should be for all black interior.

While I see an ad on-line stating a '66 GTO "N-2" has an all-burgundy exterior, I'm more inclined to go with the "N" being lower body burgundy metallic and the "2" being black vinyl top. That is how the above reference book breaks down the "N" and the "2" designations. Does yours have a vinyl top?

Hope this helps.

Hi Larry, Ya! I understand whta the #'s represent.
Yes my GTO is Burgundy with Black Cordova top.
The picture is not of my GTO.
I was woundering if the chalk markings had a specific location and was it done in all the plants that made the GTO.
Thinking I like to add that to mine.
Tk's,
Bob

Got this reply from GTOAA
I've seen the markings show up most all Pontiac, MI built cars. Alot of Kansas City cars, Some Baltimore cars and very few Freemont cars. Freemont put a lot more black on the firewall than other plants.

I think they all had them at some point but the idea was they would be painted over and not visible to the customer. As you probably know Pontiac and Kansas city had a lot of body color visible on the firewall meaning that they didn't cover the markings up as well. Most Pontiac cars they are fairly visible, but there should be a black overspray misted over them.

The car in the photo is not correct. They were added after all the paint was done on the firewall. Keep in mind the marks were on the car over primer, the car was painted, then the firewall blacked out. The marks are usually right behind the distributor. I have never seen an original car with marks above the heater box. The model was usually not written. Just the paint code, top color and sometimes the interior color. It was supposed to be low and coved up completely after the black- out process.

I've seen some original cars with the numbers written up by the trim tag also. But again, not visible after black -out.

I also saw mention of different plants doing different markings. I agree on the model number being odd.

It sounds like the most correct would be no markings at all. If anyone asks, tell them it is all original and the markings are painted over as they should be. Sounds like an easy (and correct) way out!

On a similar subject, growing up in Milwaukee area where AMC (Nash, Rambler, etc.) was (in addition to Kenosha 50 miles south where the engines were installed), we saw lots of those cars around. One time my dad and I were looking at an old Rambler that the original owner was selling. It was way beyond repair, but interestingly it had some big letters welded into the inside fender area. We asked what that was for. He said, "Those are my initials." He said he worked at AMC and if an employee on the line bought a car they would weld his initials inside the engine compartment, so the other works knew it was for a fellow worker-- and to therefore do a good job!
