I removed sensor from head and tested for ohms. Find 0 ohms. Battery is out of car so I can not immediately check for voltage to sensor. I assume I should see 5 VDC. Is a replacement sensor specific to the 1940 Pontiac or are replacements generic?

Assume you're referring to the water temperature sensor. I have used "generic" ones (although they actually looked up 1940 Pontiac- which they may not even list anymore) from NAPA with good and accurate results in the past. However, if you're contacting CPR about the gasket, I bet they'll have the sending unit also.

Once we took our '40 from Wisconsin to Florida and it started reading high. I didn't think it through and went to K-Mart and bought two dryer vent kits. I mounted the plastic vent pieces on both sides of the grill under the car, cut two round holes in each inner fender (neatly at least), and routed the 4" hoses up into the engine compartment. That cooled everything better for our trip back home. Later checked it further (better) and found it was the old sending unit that was bad. Looks like I had the oldest Ram Air Pontiac ever.

Larry, I will check w CAlifornia next week. Like your comment about Ram air.
On another subject. I did check the thermostat and found it has failed. Found NOS on eBay and ordered.
I put on water and brought to boil. No movement at all. after cooling I found the bellows full of water and leaking out. Oh well it is 78 years old.

I think you should be able to get one at NAPA. They are pretty much all the same. However, watch out for some of the box store one. I bough tone for the 400 in my '40 at Autozone and took it right back. It looked like soda can tin it was so flimsy.

Here at Parts Train http://www.partstrain.com/store/details/Pontiac/Deluxe_Series_26/Stant/Thermostat/1940/ST45358.html?source=gglpla&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIsaeQ7YCA3wIVCh-GCh211gLwEAQYAyABEgLB9fD_BwE they have a Stant thermostat (which are good ones). It says for 26 Model and then 1939-40 six. All Models six would be the same. It's 180 degrees which should be fine.

Below is a screen shot of the Stant catalog page. They all seem to sa Model 26, but it's the same six as the 25 Model. Thes numbers may help you at NAPA or some other auto parts stores, or directly from Stant. They have other temperatures too (don't use the 205).
