I have fixed my horns, have a new relay and am ready to rock, except the horn ring is all messed up. The Horn ring has flopped around on the steering wheel since I bought the car. I didn't really look at it, but bought a horn button repair kit that looks like all the other ones I have ever used and found out it won't work on a Pontiac. Does anyone have the exploded drawing for how the horn button is put together? Is there a spring under that ring? The guy I bought the car from had a piece of fuel line. Any help would be gratefully accepted. The shop manual has NOTHING on this.

You're right about the Shop Manual not showing anything. It wasn't until the 1957 manual that I found a drawing of the horn assembly, but doubt that would help.

I checked around and don't find any Parts Manuals on eBay, so kinda stumped.

The horn buttons usually had some sort of rubber cushion underneath that often deteriorated away with age. That's probably why you found rubber hose underneath.

There most probably should be a spring also. I've not seen one without one. It would be nice if someone with a '55 would chime in here. I will ask a friend of mine who has one if he can check his.

I fixed the horn, I found one of the missing parts on eBay, and found that Pontiac used a ridiculous method for isolating there horn from the contact. They used a piece of foam rubber. California Pontiac Restoration sells a precut foam donut. It works but is barely stiff enough to keep your ring from the contactor. I have already accidently honked a couple of times. I am either going to find a more dense material or add some plastic spacers...or better yet put a metal spring with insolating plastic in there. If and when I have it apart again I will take pictures for everyone who is in the same position I was.

Well, that's good news. I was on the right track about the foam. Glad CPR had something to help. I don't know of a foam that would come in a sheet big enough to cut out the ring size you need. Just a shot in the dark, but if not too expensive, could two of them be doubled up? I don't know if they have adhesive, but any contact glue should work.

A spring would help, but be ever so careful as a shot could cause a big problem. Not just a fire, but a neighbor beating you up for your horn going off in the middle of the night!

Please keep us posted so others won't have to go through what you did.

Thanks!
