It sounds like the old farmer whose prize cow fell over dead one day and he said "Funny, ain't never done that before."

I don't think there was anything strange going on, just time for something to fail. It may have had something to do with "drying out" a bit or lack of engine heat from sitting... It is always a crap shoot when something sits for any length of time.

Assuming that the hose clamp is nice and tight and the leak isn't coming from there and running down would only lead to the actual thermostat housing and gasket. The gaskets can begin to leak sometimes for no apparent reason.

I had the same place leaking on my '40 with the 400 engine. I removed the housing, gasket, and thermostat (which were also all new) and cleaned everything nice and clean. I noticed the aluminum housing had a lot of pits and suspected it might not even be perfectly flat. So, I placed a piece of medium sand paper on a flat board and sanded the housing back and forth until most all the pits were gone. I followed with a finer paper just to made sure I didn't have any appreciable scratches.

I then used a thin film of red gasket sealer on both sides of the gasket and reassembled. After a few miles I noticed a small leak and sure enough, I was able to tighten the two bolts a tiny amount more and it hasn't leaked since.
