Is it a big job to pull a steering shaft out of a steering column in a 61 Pontiac Bonneville.

Big job? Let's just say I wouldn't want to do it! Kidding... sort of.

First, if standard or power steering, or standard shift of automatic, it looks (according to the shop manual) that the job is pretty much the same.

Because they both have an attaching flange ("rag joint"), at least you don't have to disassemble the gear box as on the older cars. But you certainly have to remove the entire steering column. From there it is just taking off the steering wheel and pulling the shaft out the bottom. Assuming it pulls out of the support bearings... which it probably should with them remaining in place (at least we would hope so).

My question is, however, why are you considering doing this? Is it shaky? If so, then you will have to address the bearings/bearing supports.

If you let us know what steering and shifting you have we can scan a couple drawings for you.

It is a power steering automatic trans car and the reason I have to change it out is because the threads are stripped and someone drilled the top of the shaft and put a bolt on to hold the wheel on.

Boy, that stinks! Sort of like an old neighbor kid whose father got mad at him for his hot rodding, so took the steering wheel off of his '59 Oldsmobile. Well, the next day he rolled up to my house in the Olds... steering with a vice grips! No, I did not go for a ride with him!

Check the illustration below. It appears the only differences were between the transmission types, and not PS vs. non-PS.

Good luck.
