I know you're not hunting for opinions, and saw your post on AACA too. However, I am quite sure the ground cable isn't supposed to go up by the water inlet. My '40 engine is long gone, but I believe the ground was mounted down near the oil pan, near the front. I seem to remember it down there; certainly not up top. Is there a flat area near the engine/pan split? I can still see one in the deep recesses of my tiny brain.

I have searched my manuals and all they say to ground it to the engine, but never mention where... typical!

Actually half the fun is trying to wade thru the expert modifications done over the years! Parts not needed, shrouds, clips, etc. And the purists wonder why We give up and make Street Rods!

I have to admit sort of giving up on my 1940 Pontiac and going the modified route this time around (did first time in 1978). I wanted to upgrade anyway, but have learned that the parts that used to be around are all gone, or if available 10-times the price back then.

You mention things like clips. I have discovered an excellent source for lots of oddball stuff- Restoration Specialties in Pennsylvania. They have tons of the hard-to-find items. You can check their web site at: http://www.restorationspecialties.com or cal lat: 814-467-9842. It is best to call as their web site isn't always showing what all they do actually have.

Still hunting for battery cable info!

Turns out the mounting is near the water inlet according to CPR! Go figure! Thanks California Pontiac Parts!

I'm cornfused. The water inlet is the bottom of the water pump. The thermostat is actually the outlet (that is, out of the engine and into the radiator).

Anywho, CPR is a great source of Pontiac information- and parts.

I have been hunting Pontiac engine pictures and see a lot of engines with the negative cable in the position shown below. On different year engines this bolt area is up or down in this general area. Is this where you are referring to?
