Yes you can. It is done all the time, though it is kind of a pain in the butt... but do-able.

What car are you dealing with? Check just about any of the Service Manuals we have on-line in our On-Line Reference Library and you will find the procedure.

Basically it involves getting to the rear cap, and pushing out the old upper seal portion. There is than a trick (and a tool) to pull the new upper seal portion through. The lower seal procedure is the same as if it was out of the car.

It isn't unusual though to just change the lower part of the seal. I find the "rope" type to be the best.

Thanks for your reply. I looked in the Reference Library and did not see what I'm looking for. The car is a 1965 Grand Prix with original 389 engine. Also what is the special tool you are talking about to replace this seal. What is the best seal to purchase?

Go to our On-Line Reference Manuals and open the 1966 manual. Go to "Engine Mechanical" and look at pages 218 and 29. There the procedure is outlined.

Check this You Tube video of a Jeep rear main seal replacement. It is a very good example of the procedure. Note the rubber top seal is used. That's the easiest one to use, but a "rope" seal in the lower half if preferred my many. You can use the rope seal for the top also, but it is more difficult to feed up and around the crankshaft.

Do some more searching for the procedure and perhaps recommendations of the best product to use. A good parts house (not a box store) may have a good recommendation too.

Thanks for the info. Found the pages you pointed out and now I'm wondering how I can copy them and print them out. It seems they are protected??
