1951 Deluxe Chieftain

Looking for a horn button that is in excellent condition for the 51 Chieftain Deluxe. I've seen many but none that are in particularly good shape. Also, looking for what I think of as splash guards. They are located underneath the front near the steering box on the left and approximately the same area on the right and as far as I can determine are about 18" square.

For the horn button, check with Kurt Kelsey Pontiac Parts (look under "AFFILIATES" and them "Member Discounts" in nav bar above). Also try California Pontiac Restoration (see ad at right).

For the rubber material best to check with Steele Rubber Products in North Carolina.

These are not rubber. They are metal pans that appear to have been stamped out. The one that was on the left side of my car was destroyed by the shipper using chains underneath to secure the car. They are bolted on to the frame and other body parts.

As far as the horn button goes, I'm quite familiar with CPR, they don't carry such an item. I've checked with Kurt in the past but will try again. Thanks for the information.

Oops! I though you were referring to the rubber that hangs on some of the side panels of the older Pontiacs. Although my '40 only had it on the left side. Not as familiar with the '51 as I should be. I had a number of '54 Pontiacs and don't remember them being that big and square.

My '40 had pans on both sides that, as you describe, which were really (I guess) just to catch leaks and guide them to the back, as well as keep road junk out. I have removed mine as I'm putting modern drivetrain in the car during its re-restoration. I do not know if they would still be the same, but would happily give them to you if we can find out.

For the real big time expert on your car, look up our Tech Adviser John Harvey. See tech Advisors in the drop down window under "Members."

If you can email me pictures of what you have, it would be helpful. I'm going strictly by memory of a piece I saw that was completely ruined that I saw about 4 or 5 years ago so my approximation of the size and shape is fuzzy at best.

I forgot to ask. Is your car a 6 or 8 cylinder? It makes a difference with these pans.

You know the left one has to fit around the steering too, right? Means removing the steering arm.

I checked my parts book but it didn't show them in any drawings. Please check with our Tech Advisor too.

I received a reply from John Harvey. He too could not find these pans in any drawings and said that they would be interchangeable from any 49-52 car. However, he also said that they were not considered to be important and many were discarded as being in the way. (I presume by mechanics who needed to work above the areas the pans were covering.) My take from John was that I should not be concerned about finding replacements.

Thanks so much for your time and responses. BTW I posted a picture of my car in the photo gallery.

John knows those Pontiacs inside and out. I doubted that the pans from my '40 would fit.

John is right that they were mostly tossed as unnecessary. They also got damaged a lot on the road. If you stumble across any, scoop them up, but don't worry about not having them.

The photo shows one really great looking old Pontiac! Hope you enjoy it.
