|

I have a 1951 Chieftan Eight that I bought on eBay. It has no starter or accelerator pedal and I realized today that it is also missing the starter switch that goes under the accelerator. I'm looking for a schematic on how the switch was assembled. I have ordered a starter that is off of another 51 Chieftain Eight.
Any help is appreciated. |

Congratulations on finding a neat old Pontiac.
Check in our "On-Line Reference Manual Library." We have the entire 1949-'54 Service Manual up there for your viewing. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |

Thanks! I've been through the whole manual. As a matter of fact, that's why I joined this site. However, I have not been able to locate the information I'm looking for. If you know that I've overlooked it, could you point me in the right direction? |

|
|
In our On-Line Service Manual in the Electrical and Instruments section there is a complete schematic (page 12-5) which includes the starting system, and multiple pages (beginning on page 12-22) covering everything about the starter.
Now, I think we first need to clear up something that I think you might be confused about. That is "the starter switch that goes under the accelerator." You're thinking about Buicks that had that- Pontiac never did.
You have a typical starter with solenoid mounted to it that is on the engine. From there the battery is hooked as well as the ignition control wires which run to the starter BUTTON that mounts on the dash... turn the key, press the button, and the solenoid activates the starter motor.
If you have the Hydra-Matic, you will also have the neutral safety switch to wire in.
Check all of this out, as well as what all you actually have. It is a very basic system. If you have more questions, just ask. Check our Technical Adviser list too. We have an excellent person covering your car. _________________ PontiacRegistry.com... building the single largest source of Pontiac information, services, and entertainment in the world! |
