My '54 straight 8 could use some pep. Was kinda thinking about a Pertronix ignition set-up rather than points. Anyone gone this route before? Was there any noticeable difference in startup? acceleration?

I do not recall seeing anyone speaking of this change in an older flathead engine. No doubt it could help, however, nothing is really going to change the flathead into a race engine.

The old points systems actually worked great when just maintained. A set of points is pretty cheap compared to an entire conversion. With a new condenser, cap and good wires and plugs it will be about a good as it can ever be. If you want a little more spark in your plugs, there are any number of "high performance" coils out there to give a little more zap.

Remember too, an electronic ignition is like a light bulb... either on or off. Nobody limps home with an ailing one. I've been out on the street on a Sunday looking foe a module. I've also run a little sandpaper through a set of points and drove home without a hitch.

If you need new points, etc. check with Marx Parts in our Members Discounts (under "AFFILIATES").
