What inline 6 cyl motor can I fit onto a 1940 GM frame? Only Pontiac or Oldsmobile?? or would another motor fit?

My 6-cylinder from my '40-2519 went to the United Arab Emirates about a year ago. Some fellow restoring a '40 Woody over there.

The Pontiac sixes from about 1938 on up were all about the same. earlier, I think you would want to avoid. Olds used a flathead also, but a Pontiac engine would be easier to find, and more correct. I don't know what was different about the Olds engines, but they were.

If you aren't super concerned about "numbers matching" sort of stuff, I'd suggest getting a '53-'54 six. They had a little more ummph and a few mechanical upgrades through the years. You would have to double check things like flywheels and bellhousings, but I think they were interchangeable.

Anything will "fit" with the right amount of work. depending on how much you wish to stay stock, a messed up frame and a missing engine might be time to consider upgrading the frame (sub-framing of sorts- like a friend of mine just did), and a modern engine. I have kept the stock front end in my 2519 with all parts replaced new, but converted to disc brakes. Also going with a '73 Trans Am 400 and 350 auto.

We'll help you through this step-by-step as we can.
