Can anyone explain this date code. I thought A thru L represented the 12 production months? Thanks. Kevin

I can't find anything anywhere disputing the A-L date coding.

The numbers would indicate the first day (01) of "some month" in 1966 (6), which would be right for an end of 1966 produced '67 engine.

That only leaves September (I) through December (L) for correct month codes.

However.... I did find on a GTO web site the following information: Production Date Code on the block. This can be found on the distributor pad. It consists of letters A-L for month (A=January, etc.) One exception is that 1966 blocks made for 1967 model year have an M for December instead of L. The second digit or digits (there could be 2) are the day of the month. The last digit identifies the year the block was cast.

That seems to 'splain everything!

1967 model year was the only year they used the letter 'M' in the cast date codes.

I don't think anyone knows for sure why.
Possibly because of the change going to the 400 blocks from 389?

Anyway, I have web page where I collect the engine unit numbers on the Pontiac engines.

EUN Input form

Us this one to see/search for EUN's:

EUN Search

Put 1967 in the Year input to see the engines I have for 1967.
The other years don't have a 'M' cod.

Smile

edit: can't put links in, go to wallaceracing dot com
look for eun links
