Quite a find. You are correct to wish to put it back to 421 configuration. That is where the extra value is.

Check here: Les at 651-280-9681 or email me at killerbob33@aol.com. He is Pontiac Paradise in Minnesota and has lots of high performance Pontiac parts.

Check under "AFFILIATES" above, then "Member Discounts." Less offers our members a discount. Check the other places offering discounts to our members also... good way to save some money.

Please set up a Photo Album in our "Photo Gallery." You can post as many photos as you wish, and share them with everyone. Even your friends and family who are not members are able to access your photos-- better than any photo service we have found anywhere else.

Good luck, and keep us all posted on your progress. Yell if you have any questions or problems along the way. We will try to help.

It should be a great project . I'm in the middle of a 69 cutlass 2 door hard top that I have been working on for about a year and I'm so excited about the Catalina I been thinking about putting that off and jumping in on the Catalina.

The fellow I purchase non-ethanol fuel from for my sport boat, bass boat, and the two Trans AM's says that he has a 421 Pontiac engine. He told me that they engine came in a car that his parents owned, that was wrecked in the late 60's. It supposedly did not have a lot of mileage, was totally stock and undamaged in the accident. He says that it is in a barn and that over the years a tree grown up blocking the road into the barn. His memory is a little fuzzy about the details, so there is a lot that needs to be verified. He mentioned selling the engine. If you are interested, I can ask additional questions and get some more information? Maybe I can go and see the engine, and write down the casting numbers so that the engine can be verified? It is in far western part of North Carolina in the Smoky Mountains.

That would be great. I would enjoy the drive out to pick it up. That is exactly what I was looking for. Please let me know when you get any information. Thank you for your time and responding.

OK, I will try to catch up with him this week.

I will let you know what I find out.

If he allows me to see the engine, how is the best way to verify that it is a 421?

The casting number on the block, if you get that number I can tell if its a 421. I'll see if I can get you some more info tonight on the location of the number on the block of the engine. I think it's on the front or back of the block next to the heads.

Hi Jessie,

The owner of that 421 engine is interested in selling it. His name is Rick Fortner. His step father's name is Wiggins, thats how I mistakenly thought that Rick's last name is Wiggins also. Rick said that he will take 1K for the engine. He has to check with his former mother-in-law who owns the barn, but he does not believe that there will be any problems. She had given him the engine a couple of years ago, and and a bunch of other stuff. She mainly wants everything gone from her barn, and wants to have her barn usuable again.

The 421 came from a 1963 or 1964 Catalina 4 speed car. It was removed from the car in 1970, and supposedly has around 40K miles on it. It is complete including the exhaust manifolds, intake, carb, and breather. The fly wheel is on the engine also. The starter is included.

The engine was placed on a crate and stored in a barn with a military type of tarp wrapped around it. There is no rust on the engine, but is some evidence that squirels have nested ontop of the engine. Rick will provide the casting numbers for you to verify that the engine is what we think it is. He says that they verified it several years ago, and it checked out as a 63 or 64 421 4 speed car. Before you drive from Indiana to NC, I want to see the casting numbers for myself, write them down, and give them to you for verification.

They will have to cut some trees that have grown up in front of the barn, and will remove the engine from the barn, and move it to their garage. The barn is built on the side of a mountain, and it will be impossible to move the engine without removing the trees first. They have a couple of cherry picker hoists that can be used to load it into a truck or trailer.

Rick is supposed to call me in a couple of days. I will let you know what he says. As soon as the engine is verified, I will provide Rick's contact information, so you can deal with him yourself. That's all the information that I have at the moment. I will also take some pics and send them to you when I get a chance to see it.

The only thing that I want out of this deal is to see your Catalina when you get it finished. It will be great too see another great old Poncho saved.

Hi Jessie,

I stopped by Rick's this AM on my way home from work. They are in the process of removing the trees blocking the access to the barn so they can clean out the barn. Rick said that they should have the engine at thier shop in about a week or so. He will call me and I can go take pictures and send them to you.

Hi Jessie, Not much of an update, but worth mentioniing.

I work nights at two hospitals, and sleep during the daytime.

Rick left message on my phone sometime during the afternoon of the 21st. He said that they have the engine ready for me to see. I assume that means that it is at his shop/service station. It was too late to call him back, as they close at 5PM, and usually they are closed all weekend. Either way I will try to call Rick Saturday and try to get some more information.

Either way on Monday AM, on my way home from work I will stop and talk with Rick. I will take my camera just in case the engine is at their shop.

Keep your fingers crossed that the engine is what they say it is...

When I woke up Friday, my wife Betty asked me why the h*** I am buying a 1963 Pontiac engine for. She was much relieved when she found out that it is for another party. Betty says that I have more then enough toys.

Wow that was quick. I hope too it is a 63 motor, that is my holy grail! I really appreciate everything your doing to help me out. Please send me your address to my email so I can send you a gift card for dinner or something. FYI the casting number will be on the pass. Side front under the first cylinder on the block. Also hopefully I can meet you in person when I make the trip. Thanks again for the help and merry Christmas.
