1965 convertible Bonneville

PostPosted: Mon Oct 01, 2012 9:21 am    Post subject: What have I done? Reply with quote

First timer! Site looks great and hopefully you can help. On an impulse (and with the wife's permission) I just purchased a 1965 Bonneville convertible. A drivable 389 2bbl, 3 speed auto, teal, with a working white top-no tears! There is a laundry list of things it could use but over all its in good condition. What do I have? I've never owned a classic car and I know nothing about these cars. It caught my eye with its good look (no dents, no filler, minimum rust), great sound (dual exhaust) and price. As near as I can tell its mostly original. I've done the basics oil, plugs, battery, wires, bulbs, and new weatherstripping on the A pillars. I'm embarrassed to say I can't figure out how to replace the wipers. This is a set up I've never seen. I can't figure out or find out how to take off the arms or seem to find the right replacement blade fillers. I've tried Trico, Napa and Anco replacement blades but they don't seem to have the right widths. If this is the only problem I have I'll be happy! Thanks for the help

Well, for a first timer, you sure hit a home run. Besides being a Pontiac, it is a '65, one of the best years ever (not just in my opinion). Plus, it is a big car and a convertible.

Some might argue a Grand Prix to be a step above just because of it being more "special" but remember, the Bonneville was still the top of the line Pontiac. A convertible is the top of the heap too, body style-wise.

Perhaps a 421 with tri-power, four-speed, and 8-lug wheels would have been nice, but a Bonneville was first and foremost a mild mannered luxury cruiser.

Sounds like you have one heck of a nice car to enjoy as you restore, or just maintain and have fun with.

I sure changed enough wiper blades, arms, etc. back in that era working at gas stations, but can't remember anything special about them. Oddly, the Shop Manual nor Owners Manual even mention them.

If you do a Google search for "1965 Pontiac Wiper Blade Replacement" there are a ton of places advertising them. Some even mention installation instructions. I would look at some and try to find a phone number to call.

Keep us posted on your new Pontiac adventure.

65evil, if you an't get them off to change them , you can go to your local AutoZone & they will do it for you for free if you buy the blades there. Then all you have to do is watch them do it & when you need them again you'll be able to do it on your own.

I have a 73 GTO that I bought new, well it was a demo because the car I ordered was an SD car which never came in & i had to take what was left because I was in the Navy & had to talk to the dealer when I could.
