Help. I'm in the process of replacing the lift cylinders on my '69 Firebird convertible. There are 3 bolts holding each cylinder on. One on the lift rod (easy to remove) and two that bolt the cylinder to the body. One bolt holding the cylinder is easy to remove as it is faces the interior of the car. The outer one is not so easy. There's about a half inch of space between the bolt head and the body. The bolt is atout an inch long. So how do I get it out so that I can remove the cylinder. I can't even figure out how they got it in at the factory. Thanks for any help.

After a little snooping around I found some information that might help.

It seems that prying the last bolt outward with a long screwdriver is the "recommended" method of removal.

Check this thread and it should help: http://firstgenfirebird.org/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=194166&page=1

Good luck.

Thanks for looking Larry. I tried prying with a screw driver but the bolt is longer than the space available to get it out. I ended up having to disassemble some of the convertible top linkage at the cylnders to get the bolt out. Wasn't too difficult. The cylinders are in and when I get the car back out of storage for the summer, I'll have a go at reconnecting the linkage.

Glad you got it.

Having been a fighter jet mechanic in the Air Force, I can relate to car "can't get there from here" issues. I swear when the aerospace industry cut back in the mid-70s all their engineers went to Detroit. I think they made a special "How difficult can we make it department" especially from them.

While crawling under my niece's '76 T/A tonight I pointed out just such a situation to her-- the chiseled hole in the passenger side inner fender well. Yupe! Someone changed the blower motor some time along the way.
